Zinc Oxide To Treat Acne
**** Also check out foundation primers here, most of them contain zinc so you can wear it everyday before applying makeup.
Zinc is an essential mineral that helps the skin repair damaged tissues and heal wounds. Zinc oxide is particularly efficient in treating surface irritants such as acne, skin sores, and minor wounds by helping the skin to regenerate quickly after damage is done to it. Using zinc applied directly to the skin or taken orally has shown improvement in preventing and lessening inflammation and scarring associated with acne breakouts. And may help to prevent acne by reducing or regulating the sebum (oil our skin produces) and possibly even control breakouts from hormonal causes.
Now I’ve already been over most of the vitamins great for treating oily and acne prone skin, so today I’m going over a topical application. If you read reading the labels part on the homepage you will recall that if you see zinc oxide in your makeup labels this is a good thing. Unfortunately zinc oxide is not sold in its pure form, so the next highest concentration of zinc oxide, diaper rash cream!
“a medical study published in Dermotologic Surgery, the official publication of the American Society for Dermotologic Surgery, determines that topical ointment or cream treatments including zinc oxide show a reduction in the production of sebum and increased lesion reducing efficacy.” In layman’s terms it reduces the amount of oil the skin naturally produces and the amount of breakouts that make it to the surface of your skin.
How to use it
So yes it’s true people are smearing on diaper rash cream on their faces, chests, and backs! It seems the general population in the US is that Destin has the highest concentration of zinc oxide. Some people are using it as a mask, so just apply evenly all over their faces (avoid around the eye area, thick creams can clogs the thinner skin and cause other skin problems such as milia) wait twenty minutes or so and rinse off.
Then you have the braver souls who leave on the cream overnight and swear up and down their skin has improved dramatically using this treatment method. If you choose to go this route please change out your pillow cases regularly as they will build up with excess cream if you sleep on your stomach or sides.
A Great Testimonial
One of the testimonials from http://www.myacneremedies.com/remedies/zinc-oxide-diaper-rash-cream
For years, I’ve been using Destin (diaper rash ointment – 40% zinc oxide) on my skin as an overnight facial and it truly works. It smells a little fishy, and it kind of gets all over the pillow sometimes, but if you can stand it, it really works!! I only use it about once a month, or when needed, leave it on overnight, and then in the morning, I have the amazing skin! I’ve also noticed that it lightens my skin a bit, kind of brightens it. It’s fantastic!
It really, truly works and I love it! I’ve tried almost every other acne treatment there is, but nothing has been better than this. I know, it’s hard to believe red marks and acne go away overnight, but they do! Try it!
I figure it’s worth trying out just based on all the scientific evidence, so I think I will go and pick up some tomorrow! (Update 10/23/12) I have used the cream as a mask for the past few months about once a week, I have to say I’m impressed by how much less greasy my face gets by the end of the day now. I will continue to use this method until probably menopause because I doubt my skin will ever truly stop over producing oil on its own before then!
Check out this cutie talk about it to
Also note taking zinc internally in the form of vitamins works just as well from the inside out. To read the post for the vitamin version click here.
