Does Hand Sanitizer Help Treat Acne?
Both ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) are alcohols that kill bacteria, including the p.acne bacteria.Ethanol and isopropanol kill germs by dissolving their essential proteins. This disrupts the normal cell activity of the germ, causing it to die. Hand sanitizer with at least a 60 percent inclusion of alcohol are effective in killing bacteria.
Alcohol kills most germs on contact without causing serious harm to the skin tissue, which makes it an effective active ingredient for hand sanitizer.
Not All Alcohol Is Created Equal
Isopropyl myristate- Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40): a very drying and irritating solvent and dehydrator that strips your skin’s moisture and natural immune barrier, making you more venerable to bacteria, molds and viruses. This is not the effect we are going for when treating sensitive skin already more susceptible to bacteria. If you decide to try this method please check the ingredients first! Also be sure the check out the “Ingredients To Avoid List” on the homepage here.
Purell Hand Sanitizer
Purell is an instant hand sanitizer made of ethyl alcohol which claims to kill “99.99%” of most common germs that may cause illness (or in this case breakouts) in as little as 15 seconds. The main ingredient is 63% ethyl alcohol, which is above the recommended 60% alcohol needed to kill bacteria effectively.
If you decide the try out this remedy I would personally lean towards the Purell with Aloe and Vitamin E.
- Aloe Vera gel has antimicrobial properties that kill bacteria and anti-inflammatory properties that cut skin inflammation. It allows the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring. Aloe is moisturizer but it doesn`t give skin a greasy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily complexion.
- Vitamin E can reduce the appearance of scars (this includes acne scars) and stretch marks when applied topically. Existing acne scars are less visible within a few weeks as it helps to regenerate new skin cells to heal up existing cell damage.
