Different foundations types such as cream foundation, mineral foundation, tinted moisturizers, BB Creams, and CC creams are listed  on the menu above.

How to read makeup labels

When looking for  foundation  for oily skin most makeup companies label their products based on different skin types. Your best bet is to check the labels for descriptions with normal, oily, combination and dry.

The main ingredient in foundation is usually water, but they often include some type of oil for those with normal or aging skin. People with oily skin typically do not need the extra moisturizing properties some of these oils offer.

To find a foundation that helps control the shine and keep down oil production look for ingredients like sericite mica, and kaolin clayZinc oxide, green tea, petrolatum, and chamomile is good for soothing inflamed skin from breakouts.

  • Sericite Mica- Sericite mica is a natural powdered mica with a fine grain size and silky shine. It is used as a talc substitute. It absorbs excess oils on the skin.
  • Kaolin Clay- White Kaolin Clay is found in almost all powdered and dry cosmetics and most wet cosmetics. Its natural absorbent properties makes it essential in hygiene products and is often found in soaps, scrubs, poultices, deodorants, facial powders and masks. It is the mildest of all clays and is suitable to add to products created for people with sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it.
  • Zinc Oxide- Zinc is an essential mineral that helps the skin repair damaged tissues and heal wounds. Zinc oxide is particularly efficient in treating surface irritants such as acne, skin sores, and minor wounds by helping the skin to regenerate quickly after damage is done to it.
  • Green Tea- Compounds found in green tea, is effective at reducing skin inflammation.  Drinking and using of green tea as a toner may help reduce acne-induced inflammation, which may help cut the development of scars by reducing the severity of acne sores.
  • Petrolatum- Cosmetics-grade mineral oil and petrolatum are considered the safest, most nonirritating moisturizing ingredients ever found.
  • Chamomile- The active ingredient in chamomile essential oil is known as bisabolol, which has a number of anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties.

Ingredients to avoid for oily acne prone skin

1. Lanolins- is simply sheep skin oil extracted from wool. Any form of lanolin derivatives such as etoxylated lanolins and acetylated lanolins are very acneagentic

2. Isopropyl myristate- Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40): a very drying and irritating solvent and dehydrator that strips your skin’s moisture and natural immune barrier, making you more venerable to bacteria, molds and viruses. These ingredient helps cosmetics apply more smoothly  carry active ingredients into the skin, and gives them a slicker, sheer feel. Look for Propylene Glycol (PG), Butylene Glycol, and Polyethylene Glycol (PEG). All of these ingredients can cause irritation and acne. It also may promote brown spots and premature aging of skin.

3.Mineral Oil:  a petroleum by-product, but not to be confused with petrolatum, that coats the skin like plastic, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin’s ability to cut toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging. Did you know baby oil is made of 100% mineral oil?! I used to make DIY shaving cream with baby oil, but no more after finding this out.

4. D & C Red- red dyes are comedogenic, they are coal-tar derivatives and used in blushes. D & C red #’s 17, 21, 3, 30, and 36 are all bad for your skin.

It is also important to note that the further down on the ingredients label the ingredient is the less  in the actual product. Some products may contain some of the ingredients listed above but have so little  it is unlikely to cause a reaction.

My goal is to search out the best products out on the market for oily skin and share what I have learned with all of you.  There are many forms of makeup so I’m going to break down my findings into categories such as mineral , liquidtinted moisturizer, and cream .  Everyone has been thoroughly evaluated to be compatible for an oily skin type!

Please feel free to shoot some suggestions on brands or products you all would like to learn more about and I will do my best to try them out and report back with the results!

  1. Hi, I find your blog highly informative. Just what I been looking for!!! Now, with that being said I would appreciate your insight on these two products: CLINIQUE DARK SPOT CORRECTOR and CLINIQUE ACNE SOLUTION LIQUID FOUNDATION. Thank you in advance.

    • Hi Michelle, I would be happy to answer your questions, bare with me because this could get long but it’s not easy to explain. Lol. Oh and I added a “pin it” button on the side bar :)

Clinique Dark Spot Corrector: Clinique doesn’t list their ingredients on the packaging, but luckily I had already emailed them requesting this information before, so this is what I’ve found.
The main ingredient listed on the box is called a CL-302 complex. Which is obviously something that clinique came up with on their own… And on their website it is basically broken down like this:
There is less redness and irritation than typical dark spot formulated products that contain hydroquinone (a prescription dark spot ingredient),

This is due largely to the key ingredient, which is found within the Dianella Ensifolia plant, which originates in southeast Asia. This in turn forms part of Clinique’s patent-pending CL-302 complex, which features five synergistic brightening ingredients.

“We have selected five ingredients (for the CL-302 complex),” he noted. “In addition to Dianella Ensifolia there is ascorbic glucoside, which is a very stable form of vitamin C, also very important in terms of fading dark spots.

“The third ingredient is blackout yeast, which contains enzymes that digest excess melanin (the excess pigment causing the dark spots). Lastly, we have salicylic acid and glucosamine for exfoliation, which helps to normalise cell turnover and assist the departure of surface pigmented skin cells.”

I have added some links to some of my existing content to help go into more detail for you. I need to do a little more research into the foundation, I will have a answer for you tomorrow if possible, I may have to end up sending them an email about that indgredient list.

      • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INFORMATION YOU PROVIDED, THE PROMPT RESPONSE AND YOUR COMMITMENT TO HELP FIND AN ANSWER TO MY QUESTIONS. LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU SOON REGARDING THE FOUNDATION.

P.S.: GOING TO PIN THIS ARTICLE RIGHT NOW!!! :)

        • Your so very welcome, your the first person to actually ask about a product so I was more then happy to help :) I’m a huge addict to Pinterest myself, I find myself on there pretty much everyday, never fails to suck me in for an hour or more. I appreciate the pin; websites can generate massive amounts of traffic to their sites from there. So on to the foundation!

          CLINIQUE ACNE SOLUTION LIQUID FOUNDATION

The active ingredient is Salicylic acid – for the acne solution part of it, I can’t seem to find out how much is in there though. The good part about this foundation I’ve found is you only have to apply it once a day and is supposed to last 12 hours, so not to bad. Some acne foundation requires you apply it up to three times a day to be effective such a Neutrogena.

Now the bad; all the bolded words are a form on ingredients on the bad list for acne.. Also the coverage is light to medium so if you have existing breakouts your still going to need concealer to cover it and any previous scars. Honestly I think your better off just springing for a mild chemical peel and treating yourself. Save your money on this foundation.

          Inactive ingredients are:
          (as seen on packaging)

methyl trimethicone, water, dipropylene glycol, alcohol denat., nylon-12, butylene glycol, talc, peg-10 dimethicone, dimethicone, trimethylsiloxysilicate, silica, laminaria, saccharina extract, calcium stearate, isononyl isononanoate, caffeine, glycerin, hydroxyapatite, dimethicone/peg-10/15 crosspolymer, sorbitan

          • Thanks again for your help and the info! :) ….and not sure what’s going on with the “Pin it” button on your website but it didn’t let me pin it.

          • I just tried it myself, it won’t let you “pin” this page because I don’t have any images for it to grab and place on pinterest. I will look for something good to add on my page to fix that problem. Thanks again :)

  5. Acne occurs when the oil that is secreted by the oil glands in our skin get blocked as they are passed up to the surface. This will not make your face more oily! This product helps to control the oil from being seen on the surface of your skin or nose in your case.
Try something like clean and clear oil control moisturizer, it is available in almost every store you find around.
